First, we started out by giving the operations assistants and building managers a survey regarding their thoughts of the communication between the employees. We handed out these surveys because we felt that this way an opportunity to get some good initial feedback from the employees. We posted the survey on the employee Facebook page and got 25 responses in total from the operations assistants and the building managers. The questionnaire was relatively easy to make, not time consuming, inexpensive, and easy to have the employees fill out.
We chose to do interviews because the interviewer is able to understand how people feel in situations as well as gain valuable and meaningful information. From interviewing the operations assistants and building managers we were able to see their reactions to questions we asked them which gave us a better understanding of their feelings on the subject. Another benefit with interviews is that we were able to probe them after asking a question to gain a deeper understanding on the issues.
To finish up the data collection methods, we also did covert and overt observations. Observations have the ability to discover unexpected problems in a workplace. One of our group members works at the front desk of Madison Union, so every shift she would pay attention to the different communication happening between employees and between the manager and employees and write down notes after her shifts. When we were doing interviews with the employees all of us were engaging in overt observations. Even though the employees knew that we were watching them, we still were able to get a good sense of how the employees act in their natural habit.
By engaging in three different data collection methods, we were able to have reliable and valid information.
